Success: MHVTL on Ubuntu 10.04 with iSCSI support

Postby marekk » Thu Jun 03, 2010 5:23 pm

Hi

I prepared VMware virtual machine (Workstation 7) with Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Server, MHVTL, SCST, iScsi-scst.
I used scripts, configuration and guides from MHVTL forum.

Some details:
Kernel: 2.6.32.11+drm33 updated with scst patches
VLT: Version - 0.18-7, Robot - QUANTUM PX720, Drives - 4x SDLT600
Storage:100GB ext4 LVM, thin provisioned disk (if you want to add more space simply add new disk to VM, resize Logical Volume lv1 and ext4 filesystem)

Testing env.- NetBackup 7.0.1RC1 installed on Windows 2008 x64 R2.
Backup and restore works fine :)))

~385.MB RAR, password: mhvtl_mk
http://hotfile.com/dl/46521629/37adb94/mhvtl.rar.html

Details about operating system:
IP: 10.201.0.106 (you should to change it in /etc/network/interfaces)
user: user1, password: user1

After reconfiguration open iScsi Initiator and add IP address of VM to configuration, it automaticly detects 5 targets (1 robot and 4 drives)

Many thanks for making this VMWare image available.. It will potentially save many people lots of work.
I'm downloading now.. Only 45mins left.

I have my doubts on storing media files on de-duplication storage (e.g. www.opendedup.org).

By the time the backup software has chopped & diced each client, sent it to the tape drive (any reasonable backup software will multiplex backup streams onto the tape), the dedup engine will have a hard time attempting to determine which/what is unique. End result will be a low dedup ratio.

I think you will find dedup is much better off done at the file level before it's packaged off into tape size blocks (i.e. Built into the backup software).

But only testing will prove/disprove this :)

I've tested SDFS, ZFS and LESSFS but deduplication simply doesn't work on this kind of data. MHVTL has good internal compression so if someone wants to save space - it's good solution.
