Ubuntu 12.04 kern.log growing

sbcedservice
Hello Mark,

really I can't say if this is a new event or if I'm seeing it only now.

The kern.log is growing up (10 Gb) filled by messages like

Did you apply the mhvtl kernel patch I pushed git a couple of days ago ?

If so, please roll that one back... And let me know how you get on.

Looking at the source now. This log msg can only occur with kernel logging enabled (VTL_DEBUG = 1) or higher

Try "echo 0 > /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts"

To see if the messages stop

OK - in front of a real keyboard now..

# cat /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts
(Should return 0)

If it's greater than 0 - do the following:
# echo 0 > /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts

You can check the kernel module version using:
# cat /sys/module/mhvtl/version

Should return 0.18.12 or 0.18.13 or 0.18.14 (latest)

0.18.14 contains a change which is only lightly tested - but seems OK so far. I've put it thru a lot more testing today..

The 0.18.12 has been unchanged for at least 6 months..
0.18.13 fixes potential overflow if trying to add more than 255 devices..

Your setting in /etc/mhvtl/mhvtl.conf with 'VTL_DEBUG = 0' should result in the /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts containing '0' if it was set that way last time the kernel module was loaded.

There should be no reason to roll back to previous kernel module version.

Re: Ubuntu 12.04 kern.log growing

My results:

sudo cat /sys/module/mhvtl/version
0.18.14

sudo cat /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts
0x1

sudo echo 0 > /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts
-bash: /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts: Permission denied

I can't find a way to do it .......

Next options
1. Reboot :)
or
2. stop daemons
rmmod mhvtl
modprobe mhvtl ops=0
Restart daemons

1 will work because of VTL_DEBUG =0
2 will unload kernel module and reload with no logging

rather difficult to understand:

After reboot, before daemons start

sudo more /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts
/sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts: No such file or directory

after daemons start (via GUI)

sudo more /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts
0x1

Trying 2:

sudo /etc/init.d/mhvtl stop

You are right ...

anyway, the /sys/bus/pseudo/drivers/mhvtl/opts is 0x0 now, also with GUI daemons start
